NSS offers mechanical design services that compliment our RF and electrical design services. This allows for the efficient design of electronics from the board level to fully packaged units. NSS uses Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software to model and document designs in detail. The 3D models are utilized by our interdisciplinary team to iterate and optimize designs. These designs are typically ruggedized for military applications aboard aircraft, shipboard, and land-based platforms. We can design products to meet requirements such as temperature extremes, vibration, shock, Electromagnetic Interference (EMI), and environmental exposure to rain, sand and dust, humidity, etc.
In addition to CAD software, NSS utilizes Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and structural analysis tools for thermo-fluid and structural analyses. These tools accelerate the design process by allowing thermal and structural requirements to be verified early in the design phase and for thermal and structural performance to be optimized.

CAD Modeling
At the core of our mechanical design process is CAD modeling. We utilize CAD from design inception through prototyping, all the way to final design. From 3D models of circuit boards imported from our board layout tools to custom wire harnesses and chassis, our products are modeled in sufficient detail for analysis, documentation, and manufacturing.
Thermo-fluid analysis
Thermal analysis plays a key role in the design of electronics packages. Units can be forced air, natural convection, conduction, or liquid cooled and can sometimes require the use of heaters for proper operation at cold temperatures. Simulating the thermal performance can ensure sensitive electronics remain within temperature limits throughout the various operating conditions and can provide other useful information such as pressure drop and required flow rates. NSS utilizes a CAD embedded CFD tool to allow for analysis and optimization of parametric models.
Structural analysis
Structural analysis of our products can entail static, frequency, and dynamic analyses. These analyses can provide information on stress, strain, resonance, and fatigue. This analysis can be critical for military applications where there is often harsh vibration and shock. NSS utilizes a CAD embedded Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tool to allow for analysis and optimization of parametric models.
