North Star Scientific Corporation (NSS) has developed a family of Remote Power Amplifiers (RPA) that is fully compatible with the AN/VRC-99 radio system. The remote capability of the RPA affords operational flexibility by accommodating as much as 20 dB of RF line loss between the unit and the VRC-99 radio. Combined with the built-in LNA, receive performance can be maximized by fixing the 4 dB noise figure via placement near the communications antenna. Alternately, the Remote Power Amplifier can be co-located with the VRC-99 Radio.

The Remote Power Amplifier also features a “Near/Far” receive protection mode. Input receive power is monitored in each time slot. When a neighboring VRC-99 network participant radiates in close proximity, receive path attenuation is switched in to avoid saturating the VRC-99 Radio without affecting the receive sensitivity for other network participants.
